KICK-OFF

Where Are You?

Every league table tells a story.

Some teams are flying. Some are chasing the leaders. Some are comfortably mid-table. Others are looking nervously over their shoulders. A few are fighting for survival.

Then there are the teams making a comeback, the newly promoted teams finding their feet, and the surprise packages exceeding everyone's expectations.

Life can feel remarkably similar.

There are seasons when everything seems to be going our way and others when we cannot seem to buy a win.

There are seasons of progress, consolidation, transition, struggle and recovery.

So here's the question:

Where are you on your life's league table?

And perhaps two even more important questions:

Where would you like to be?

What might help you get there?

Before we go any further, there is one important rule.

Your life's league table isn't about comparing your worth with somebody else's.

Your competition is the person you see in the mirror.

The aim isn't to become more valuable than somebody else.

It is to keep learning, developing and becoming a better-equipped version of yourself.

Your current position describes something about your present situation.

It does not determine your value, and it does not determine where you will finish.

There's plenty of the season still to play.

1. TOP OF THE TABLE

Things are going well.

You're achieving, progressing and perhaps enjoying the results of years of learning, preparation and hard work.

In football, the top team attracts attention. People study what they're doing. Success brings recognition, opportunity and expectation.

But reaching the top and staying there are two different challenges.

Success can create its own dangers: complacency, overconfidence, exhaustion, loss of hunger or simply assuming that what worked yesterday will continue working tomorrow.

If you're enjoying a strong season, enjoy it.

But keep training.

Keep learning.

Keep strengthening the squad.

Keep preparing for the next fixture.

TOUCHLINE QUESTION

What has helped you reach your present position — and what will you need to keep doing to remain effective?

2. CHASING THE LEADERS

Perhaps you're doing well, but you know there's another level available.

You're not struggling.

You're progressing.

But you're not yet where you want to be.

Football is full of teams that consistently finish near the top without quite breaking through.

Sometimes the missing ingredient is skill.

Sometimes it's confidence.

Sometimes resources.

Sometimes strategy.

Sometimes patience.

And sometimes another team simply has advantages that cannot immediately be matched.

That's why your life's league table shouldn't become an endless comparison with other people.

Someone else may have resources, opportunities, experience or circumstances you don't have.

Your better question is:

Am I progressing from where I was?

Personal development is less about overtaking everybody else and more about becoming better equipped for your own game.

VAR CHECK

Are you measuring progress against somebody else's life or against your own development?

3. COMFORTABLE MID-TABLE

Mid-table isn't necessarily a bad place.

Sometimes it represents enormous progress.

You've survived difficult seasons. You've established yourself. Things are reasonably stable.

And stability matters.

But comfort can quietly become complacency.

When nothing is urgently wrong, there can be little incentive to improve.

No relegation battle.

No title challenge.

No crisis.

Just another season.

The danger isn't simply remaining where you are.

The danger is failing to notice that the game around you is changing.

Skills change.

Circumstances change.

Relationships change.

Opportunities change.

You change.

A team that stops developing can eventually find that everybody else has moved forward.

TRAINING GROUND

Ask yourself:

Where in my life am I maintaining rather than developing?

There may be nothing wrong with your current position.

But perhaps there's more football in you.

4. THE RELEGATION BATTLE

Sometimes life becomes uncomfortable.

Things that once felt secure begin to feel uncertain.

A relationship changes.

Resources become stretched.

Confidence disappears.

Work becomes unstable.

Results aren't coming.

One difficult result follows another and suddenly you're looking over your shoulder.

Football teams in relegation battles often discover something important:

Problems ignored early become emergencies later.

The same can happen in life.

This isn't the moment for shame.

It's the moment for attention.

What has changed?

Where are you losing ground?

What needs strengthening?

Who needs to know?

What help is available?

Your position may be precarious, but the final whistle hasn't gone.

YOUR NEXT PASS

Identify one area currently moving in the wrong direction.

Don't try to solve the whole season today.

Ask instead:

What's the next useful action I can take?

Make that pass.

5. THE COMEBACK SEASON

Relegation happens.

Plans fail.

Opportunities disappear.

Relationships end.

Businesses struggle.

Confidence collapses.

Sometimes we simply get things wrong.

There are seasons when we find ourselves somewhere we never expected to be.

But football history is filled with teams that went down and came back.

Some returned quickly.

Others rebuilt slowly.

Some had to change managers, players, systems, expectations and habits before progress returned.

A setback can become part of your history without becoming your identity.

The question isn't only:

What happened to me?

It's also:

What can I learn from what happened?

Comebacks aren't built through pretending the defeat never happened.

They're built by learning from it.

DRESSING ROOM QUESTION

What has your difficult season taught you that your successful seasons couldn't?

Take the lesson with you.

Leave what doesn't need to travel.

The next season needs you.

6. THE YO-YO TEAM

Up.

Down.

Progress.

Setback.

Another good start.

Another difficult finish.

Some teams are good enough to win promotion but struggle to establish themselves at the next level.

Life can develop similar patterns.

Perhaps you've made changes before.

Started exercising.

Saved money.

Studied.

Changed habits.

Repaired relationships.

Started projects.

Things improved — and then slowly returned to where they were.

That doesn't necessarily mean the improvement wasn't real.

It may mean your systems weren't yet strong enough to sustain it.

Progress requires more than inspiration.

It needs structure.

Support.

Habits.

Resources.

Relationships.

Learning.

And sometimes coaching.

VAR CHECK

What positive change have you made before but struggled to sustain?

Instead of asking only, “How do I start again?”, ask:

“What would help this change last?”

7. THE NEWLY PROMOTED TEAM

You've made it.

New job.

New responsibility.

New relationship.

New opportunity.

New qualification.

New level.

New stage.

You worked to get here — and now you're discovering that getting promoted and playing at the new level aren't the same thing.

That's normal.

New levels expose new learning needs.

You may not yet have the experience of people who've been playing at this level for years.

But you have something too.

Energy.

Curiosity.

Fresh perspective.

The experience that got you promoted.

You belong in the league.

Now learn how to play in it.

TRAINING GROUND

Where have you recently entered a bigger game?

Then ask:

What does this level require from me that the previous one didn't?

That's your next training assignment.

THE LEAGUE TABLE CAN CHANGE

There's something worth remembering about every league table.

It's temporary.

It's a snapshot.

Today's position is the accumulated result of what has happened so far.

Tomorrow there is another fixture.

The team at the top can decline.

The team at the bottom can recover.

The newcomer can surprise everybody.

The struggling team can find form.

The comfortable team can become ambitious.

The relegated team can return.

And sometimes events outside a team's control dramatically change its season.

The same is true of life.

Not everything that has contributed to your present position was your choice.

Some people begin with advantages others don't have.

Some inherit resources.

Others inherit obstacles.

Some encounter opportunities.

Others encounter adversity.

So your league position should never become a judgement of your worth.

But whatever your starting position, one question remains available:

What's my next pass?

YOUR LEAGUE TABLE

It's time to stop looking at everybody else's results.

Look at your own season.

CURRENT POSITION

Where am I now?

Describe your present season honestly.

DESIRED POSITION

Where would I like to be?

Not where somebody else thinks you should be.

Where would meaningful progress look like for you?

RECENT FORM

Am I improving, declining or holding steady?

Look beyond one result.

What's the pattern?

BIGGEST OPPOSITION

What is currently making progress difficult?

Name it.

Problems become easier to work with when they're visible.

STRONGEST PLAYER

What's already working well in my life?

Don't analyse only your weaknesses.

Good coaches recognise strengths too.

POSITION NEEDING ATTENTION

What area of my life needs strengthening?

You don't need to rebuild the entire team.

Find the position requiring attention.

NEXT FIXTURE

What's immediately ahead of me?

What conversation, decision, challenge, opportunity or responsibility is coming next?

NEXT PASS

What's one action I can take?

Not eleven.

One.

Make the next faithful pass.

IDEAS FROM THE HEAD COACH

Wherever you currently find yourself on your life's league table, several principles can help.

Keep training.
Continue developing your knowledge, skills, habits and capabilities.

Strengthen your resources.
Identify what your present and future game requires that you don't yet have.

Develop your mindset.
Learn to recognise possibilities without denying realities.

Pursue incremental improvement.
Small gains sustained over time can transform a season.

Stay around people who help you grow.
Good teammates matter. So do good coaches.

Don't assume your position is fixed.
Good seasons can deteriorate. Difficult seasons can improve. Remain attentive in both.

Ask for help when you're sliding.
Early intervention is often easier than a late rescue.

Learn from setbacks.
If you've dropped down the table, don't waste the experience. Review it, learn from it and build your comeback.

And remember:

Progress doesn't always mean reaching somebody else's number one.

Sometimes winning means being further forward than you were last season.

YOU KNOW YOUR POSITION. NOW MEET YOUR TEAM.

Your league position can tell you where you are.

But it can't fully explain why you're there.

For that, we need to look at the team you're fielding.

What shapes your decisions?

What gives you purpose?

What happens to your confidence under pressure?

Who surrounds you?

How healthy are you?

How are you learning?

Where has creativity gone?

How well are your relationships functioning?

What are you trying to achieve?

How are you handling your emotions?

What resources are available to you?

These aren't eleven unrelated questions.

They're a team.

And when one player struggles, other positions can be affected.

That's the thinking behind TACTICS® — Wisdom from the Beautiful Game.

TACTICS uses the language, imagery and lessons of football to help us think differently about the beautiful game of life.

Your life's league table was the beginning.

Now it's time to meet your: Starting XI.

THE FINAL WHISTLE?

Not yet.

Wherever you located yourself while reading this book — top, middle or bottom; progressing, struggling, rebuilding or beginning again — remember:

This is your current league position, not your final position.

There's another fixture.

There's more to learn.

There are players to develop.

There are decisions to make.

And there's another pass available.

So look at the table.

Learn from it.

Then lift your eyes back towards the pitch.

The game continues.

March on.
